How to set up MFA for the first time

Want the visual version? jump to our step-by-step guide.

Step 1 — Pop your details into the Future Super login page. You'll land on a screen to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA for short).

Step 2 — Download a free authenticator app from your app store.

Step 3 — Add Future Super to your Authenticator app:

  • Using Google Authenticator? Tap the '+' and scan the QR code on your screen. Done!

  • Different app? Look for the '+' or 'Add account' option (they all work pretty much the same way).

  • Can't scan? No dramas. Click 'Can't scan? Try this' for a code you can type in manually.

  • Hit 'Continue' once you're paired up.

  • You'll see a 6-digit code that refreshes every 30 seconds. This 'one-time code' can only be used once, and you'll need to go to your app for a new code every time you log in.

Step 4 — Type that 6-digit code into the Future Super website and hit 'Verify'.

Boom! You're in. Welcome to your account.

Once you confirm what you're transferring, we'll take it from there and let you know when it arrives. Transfers usually take 3–7 business days, and up to 28 days in some cases.

Before you consolidate, heads up that:

  • Transferring your full balance will close your old account
  • Insurance attached to your old account may be cancelled so check your cover first (you may be able to transfer it)
  • You can transfer a partial amount if you want to keep benefits from your old fund
  • Tax implications are rare but worth checking if you're transferring from an untaxed fund
Consolidation may not be right for everyone. You should consider different fees and costs, your personal circumstances, and any other relevant information before making a decision to transfer your super.

Frequently asked questions about finding and combining super

How do I transfer my other super to Future Super?

Transferring your super means bringing your money together into one account. One set of fees, one login, and all of it invested in line with your values. If you have super with another fund and you would like to move this money to Future Super, here's how:

Transfers usually take 3 to 7 business days to process, but in some cases can take up to 28 days. We’ll send you a confirmation email when we’ve received it, and you will be able to view the transaction in your online account once processed.

Other ways to transfer

Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSFs)

To transfer funds from your Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) to your Future Super account, this will need to be arranged by the SMSF administrator.

Please get in touch with us at info@futuresuper.com.au or call us on 1300 658 422 for further information.

ATO-held super

You can transfer any ATO-held super you have through your MyGov account. You can find further information about how to do this here.

The above information is general information only and does not take into account any person's financial objectives, situation or needs. We recommend that you seek professional financial advice tailored to your own personal circumstances before deciding to transfer to Future Super.

You should consider the different fees and costs, amount of insurance cover offered and any other relevant information before deciding to transfer your super. Transferring your super may result in the loss of any insurance coverage you previously held with your current fund. A full transfer of an existing super account will close that account, ending any benefits associated, such as insurance cover. A partial transfer will keep your existing account open and any insurance cover you hold through the account will continue subject to eligibility requirements and the ability to continue to pay premiums. You can apply for new insurance with Future Super (subject to eligibility) or apply for a transfer of cover before rolling over. If you have a pre-existing condition it may be difficult for you to get any or equal cover with another provider. Click here to learn about insurance at Future Super and contact us for more information.

If you intend to claim a tax deduction on a personal contribution, you must lodge the relevant form (called a Notice of Intent) with the fund in which you made that contribution, before rolling over those funds.

How do I use the app to transfer my existing super?

There are two ways to transfer your super through the app:

  • Option 1: Find my super. We'll search for your super accounts using your ID. No need to know your previous fund name or member number.

  • Option 2: Transfer your super. You enter your previous fund's details manually.

Not sure which one to use? If you don't have your previous fund's details handy, go with ‘Find my super’.

Option 1: Find my super

What you'll need:

A valid ID. Accepted forms of ID include:

  • Australian driver's licence
  • Australian passport
  • Australian visa
  • Australian citizenship certificate
  • Medicare card
  • ImmiCard
  • Centrelink card
  • Birth certificate
  • Change of name certificate
  • Marriage certificate

Steps:

1. Open the Future Super app and go to ‘Find my super’. Tap ‘Find my super’ on your Dashboard, or go to ‘More’ → ‘Find my super’.

2. Verify your identity. Enter your details exactly as they appear on your ID. Full legal name, date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format, and document number with no extra spaces.

3. Choose what to transfer and confirm. We'll find your super accounts and show you what's available. Select how much you'd like to transfer and confirm. We'll contact your previous fund directly. No need to chase anything up yourself.

4. Done! We'll take care of the rest! Transfers usually take 3 to7 business days to process, but in some cases can take up to 28 days. You'll be able to view the transaction in your online account once processed.

Option 2: Transfer your super

What you'll need:

  • The name of your previous super fund
  • Your member number with that fund

Steps:

1. Open the Future Super app. Go to ‘More’ → ‘Account details’ and scroll down to ‘Transfer super’. No balance yet? If your Future Super account shows $0, you can also find this in your Dashboard, Balance or Transactions screen. Look for ‘Transfer super’.

2. Tap 'Add super fund +'

3. Enter your previous fund's details. Search for your fund by name, then enter your member number and choose whether you'd like to transfer your full balance or a partial amount.
If more than one fund appears with the same name, check the USI (Unique Superannuation Identifier) or ABN (Australian Business Number) to make sure you select the right one. You can find your USI on the government's Super Fund Lookup website.

4. Add more funds if needed. Consolidating more than one account? Tap ‘Add another fund +’ and repeat the process for each fund.

5. Tap Confirm. Review your details and tap ‘Confirm’ to proceed.

6. Review and submit. You'll see a summary screen with all the funds listed. Tap ‘Submit Transfer’ to send your request.

7. Done! We'll take care of the rest! Transfers usually take 3 to 7 business days to process, but in some cases can take up to 28 days. You'll be able to view the transaction in your online account once processed.

You should consider the different fees and costs, amount of insurance cover offered and any other relevant information before deciding to transfer your super. Transferring your super may result in the loss of any insurance coverage you previously held with your current fund. How do I transfer my existing super through myGov?

You can request a transfer of any old super funds, or any ATO-held super you have, through your myGov account. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Head to myGov and sign in.
  2. Open the Australian Taxation Office page under Your Linked Services (If you haven’t linked your ATO account then you’ll need to do this first).
  3. Click on the Super tab, select Manage and then select Transfer super. (this option will only appear if you have more than one eligible super account)
  4. A list of your funds including any ATO-held super with their last reported balances* will show up. Select the accounts you’d like to transfer from and the account you’d like to transfer to (i.e. from ABC super to Future Super)

Note: There will be an ‘as at’ or ‘effective’ date for the balance shown. In a lot of cases, it will be 30 June of the last financial year as funds are only required to report to the ATO once a year. This means your actual account balance may have changed since it was last reported to the ATO, and may be higher or lower than shown in your myGov account. Performing a rollover using myGov will transfer the actual full balance in the account as at the date of rollover request.

You can also use a ‘Request for rollover of whole balance of super benefits between funds (NAT 75359)’ form. Learn more about the process on the ATO website.

Please note that you can only transfer a whole account balance this way. Transferring your whole balance will close your other super account and cancel any insurance you hold through that account. Learn about insurance at Future Super →

If you want to transfer part of your super account balance, you can set this up with your Future Super app or online account instead.

We'll take care of the rest! Transfers from other funds usually take 3 to 7 business days to process, but in some cases can take up to 28 days. Please note that processing times to transfer ATO-held super vary and are subject to the ATO's timeframes.

Frequently asked questions about setting up contributions

How much superannuation is my employer required to pay?

Employer Superannuation Guarantee (SG) contributions are presently 12% of a person's ordinary time earnings (subject to a maximum dollar limit). Some employers pay more than the minimum 12% but it's not allowable for employers to pay less than this.

You can read more about employer contributions on the government MoneySmart website here.

Employer contributions & tax

Australian employers are required by Government legislation to make superannuation contributions for their eligible employees. These are called Employer Superannuation Guarantee (SG) contributions.

Generally, all employees are entitled to SG contributions, no matter how much they earn in a month. It doesn't matter whether you're full time, part time or casual, or if you're a temporary resident of Australia.

If you're under 18 years old, you must work more than 30 hours per week to be entitled to super contributions.

If you're a contractor, you may still be entitled to super from your employer. You can read more about super contributions for contractors here.

Please note, your employer's super contributions may be shown on your payslip, but employers will often transfer this money to your super fund every 3 months by the quarterly due dates.

Some people may have multiple accounts, so it is important to tell your employer about your Future Super account if you want your employer's contributions to be invested with us on your behalf.

Contributions made by your employer (including salary sacrifice) are taxed at 15%. As this rate is lower than most people's marginal income tax rate, these contributions are called Concessional Contributions.

Frequently asked questions about boosting your super

How do I make a personal super contribution?

If you'd like to grow your super balance, you can make personal contributions to your super directly from your bank account.

How to make a personal contribution to your Future Super account

You can use BPAY to make a payment (or recurring payments) from your bank account.

To find our BPAY biller code and your unique BPAY reference, log in to your Future Super online account and navigate to Contributions > Make a contribution.

Once we receive your contribution, our administrators will allocate it to your account. Please allow 2-10 business days for your contribution to be processed and appear in your transactions.

There are several types of voluntary contributions, including personal, spouse, and Downsizer contributions. To make a spouse or Downsizer contribution, you'll need to submit a Alternative Contribution Form. Please see the Australian Taxation Office (ATO)'s website for more information on different contribution types.

Annual contribution caps and tax deductions

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) sets an annual contribution cap (per financial year), and if you go over this cap you may be required to pay additional tax - you can see more information here. For the 2025/2026 financial year, the standard cap amounts are $120,000 for non-concessional contributions, and $30,000 for concessional contributions per financial year.

If you claim a tax deduction for your personal contributions, they become concessional contributions and are effectively from your pre-tax income. They will then be taxed in your fund at a rate of 15%. If you don't claim a tax deduction for them, they're non-concessional contributions and are from your after-tax income or savings.

If you wish to claim your personal contributions as a tax deduction, you need to submit a validNotice of intent to claim or vary a deduction for personal super contributions form (NAT 71121) (or Notice of intent). You can find further instructions about how to make aclaim on the ATO website here, and more information on how and when to submit a Notice of intent in our FAQs.

What is a Contributions Tax?

The super contributions your employer makes from your before-tax income (concessional contributions) are taxed at 15% by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

This tax component is displayed in your transaction history as 'Contributions Tax' and is sent to the ATO by Future Super regularly.

Note - If you exceed the concessional contributions cap of $32,500 in a financial year, additional tax may apply.

The super contributions you make from your after-tax income (non-concessional) are not subject to tax unless you exceed the cap of $130,000 in a financial year. If you exceed the cap the excess will be taxed at the top marginal tax rate.

For more information on how super contributions are taxed and annual contribution limits see ATO's website.

What is the difference between concessional and non-concessional contributions?

Non-concessional contributions

Non-concessional contributions are able to be made to your account from your after-tax income and are not taxed when entering the fund.

There is a non-concessional contribution cap of $130,000 per financial year. You can read more here.

Concessional contributions

Concessional contributions are taxed at a 15% rate and are made to your account from pre-tax income. These contributions include those made by employers from your pre-tax income and self-employed people who may wish to make contributions from their pre-tax income and claim a tax deduction for those contributions. Members of other types of employment can also make personal concessional contributions.

The concessional contributions cap is $32,500 per financial year. You can read more here.

What is the difference between binding and non-binding nominations of beneficiaries?

A binding death benefit nomination is a written direction made by you to the Trustee that sets out the dependants and/or legal personal representative, as decided by you, who are to receive your benefit in the event of your death. So long as the binding death benefit nomination is valid, the Trustee is bound to follow it.

A non-binding death benefit nomination is a written request made by you that suggests to the Trustee the beneficiaries that may receive your benefit in the event of your death. The Trustee has the final say as to who should receive your death benefits. The Trustee will consider your nomination but is not bound to follow it. The Trustee has the discretion to pay to any one or more of your dependant(s) or legal personal representative(s) or a combination of both.
